MANY businesses and organisations boast about succession planning and seamless change but very few achieve it as smoothly as Warrigal Care has recently with the changing of the guard between Ian Wilson and Mark Sewell.

Ian retired this month after 11 years as chief executive officer. He was replaced by his deputy CEO and operations manager, who was promoted from within after being chosen by the board of directors as Ian's successor.

Ian had been in the role since 1993 and led the executive management team's significant redevelopment of the not-for-profit organisation's residential care program.

Chairman Alan Hardy said they were the biggest improvement initiatives in Warrigal Care's 40-year history and Ian's legacy would be the stability, maturity and sound leadership he brought to the organisation.

"He came to us at a critical time and established a new and impressive senior management team," he said.

Alan said Ian had positioned the organisation well for continued success and growth which would continue in the more than capable hands of Mark who had worked directly with Ian and the board for more than six years.

Mark was also a key driver of change and worked hard to ensure Warrigal Care delivered great care and service.

Mark, 47, has qualifications in social sciences and management and more than 25 years' experience in human services.

He started as a carer before becoming a care manager in youth and family work, disability services and aged care.

Mark said he was keen to pick up where Ian had left off because human services needed to to be continually reformed into stronger business entities.

Warrigal Care has an ambitious development plan including more regional aged care services and a strong volunteer and community support base.
